CHALLENGE
Pacific Aluminum was committed to providing 542 bomb blast-resistant windows to Bucher Glass in Fairbanks, Alaska for their RFM Bomb-Blast Window Project, but within a very short time frame. A single-component silicone sealant was being added to their standard window system to make them blast-resistant, but this was creating a fabrication bottleneck and they would not be able to produce the full order on time. The extra steps involved and the wait period for the sealant curing would cause them to miss their deadline and affect their ability to do the job profitably.
SOLUTION
Pacific Aluminum turned to Tremco for help. A team of Tremco glazing specialists quickly helped them to simplify the fabrication process by revising their application to drop-in, back-bed glazing using a two-component, structural glazing sealant. A custom bulb gasket was designed and produced for the site line within a couple of weeks and Proglaze® II Structural Glazing Sealant was installed for back-bedding the glass, followed by installation of the glazing stop and wedge gasket. A mock-up of the recommended system was created, and engineering and manufacturing teams confirmed its performance and compatibility.
This change reduced the number of steps from ten to five, and the fast cure of Proglaze II sealant allowed completed units to be shipped the following day. Within the month, units were being fabricated and Pacific Aluminum began shipping 120 units per week, meeting their deadline.
